Aneek's new play looks back at Panchanan Karmakar, the uncredited craftsman of Bengali type: while the British initiative of Halhed and Wilkins took the honours, it was Panchanan who worked day and night from 1775 to 1778 to cut the punches for a harmonious, artistic Bengali typeface — and went unmentioned in the history of Bengali printing.
